Jokai House is a small apartment complex with retail space at the ground floor. It is located in the Hungarian countryside, in a prominent location of a Southern Hungarian town facing a 100-year-old primary school. The long-neglected site is repurposed and it becomes the new anchor at the end of the street giving new life and new dynamics to the neighborhood.
The surrounding landscape gets a facelift too; with its tiered steps facing a big lawn at the street corner it opens up to the public, drawing in people to the shops or just to take a seat and enjoy the fine weather in the summer. While the building proportions and the material usage respects the local neighborhood in a low-key manner, the contemporary massing composition and facade articulation introduces a fresh take on urban mixed-use developments to the region.
